John Charles HARMS is said to have been an early settler of Sacramento County, arriving in the early 1850's. He was said to have been born July 1830 in Province Hanover Germany. He died 14 Nov. 1885 in Elverta CA. He married 1st. 21 June 1857, in Sacramento County, California to Louisa Elizabeth STEINMULLER (widow of George STEINMILLER) b.1822 or 1826 in Germany. She died 4 Jun. 1867 in Elverta, CA.

Dora HARMS, b. 1862 Elverta, CA, d. of burns, 24 Aug. 1868, Elverta, CA.

They may have also had a son (or nephew) Otto HARMS. I have found no birth, death, marriage or Census information on him. Here is a picture said to be him.

MYSTERY HARMS

From the Sacto. Co. census. U.S. Census 1860 Sac. Co reel 5 (maybe 6) p. 171 (same page that Charles Harms is on) in the household of Thos. Kelly a farmer from Ireland, his wife Morag, age 25, John age 3, Alice 2 & Kate 6/12ths we have Peter HARMS age 45 a Laborer from Ger.

The family pictured at the right is said to be a HARMS family.

In a post card Post Marked: BRODERICK CAL. SEP 10 1910, an exteacher (Olive MARTINELLI) of Helena Nicolaus says she has Helena's cousin Alice HARMS in her class at a Broderick school. I think she may be the same Alice in the family below .

All the HARMS below lived in Yolo County & had something to do with "The Chicory Ranch". Yolo County Place Names - Past and Present has Chicory Bend located in the East central portion of Yolo County on the Sacramento River, South of Washington.
