John Charles HARMS' death notice states he was a native of Province Hanover, Germany, aged 55 years, 5 months. That puts his birth at 11 June 1830. According to a family story he came to America to avoid the manditory term of service in the Landwehr (the German army). That would put him in The U. S. in the late 1840's, early 1850's.

21 Jun 1857 in Sacramento, California Charles HARMS married the widow of George STEINMILLER, Louisa Elizabeth (b.4 March 1826 Germany, d. 4 June 1867, Elverta California). They had a daughter Dora HARMS b. 27 Aug 1868, d. 27 Aug 1868 both in Sacramento County.

14 November 1869 in Sacramento California Charles married Anna Magdalena "Lena" DEXHIEMER b. 21 February 1835 in Biebelnheim, Rheinhessen, Hessen, Germany.

11 November 1885 Charles HARMS died in Elverta, Sacramento County, California. His death notice states "St. Louis, Mo. papers please copy." so I assume he has relatives in Missouri.

1 November 1924 Lena Dexheimer HARMS died in Sacramento County, California.

Stahl of South San Francisco, Mrs. Anna Wait of Elverta, Mrs. Sophia Dosch, Mrs. Philippina Poole, Henry D. Harms of Sacramento & the late Mrs. Lena Nicholas: a native of Germany, aged 98 years, 8 months and 10 days. Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral to-morrow (Tuesday) at 1:30 p.m., from the home of Harry A. Nauman & Son. 1811 G Street. Interment City Cemetery.

The first photo was taken after Charles HARMS death (November 1885) and before the death of Caraline HARMS (August 1890). Sophia (HARMS) DOSCH is the one who added the picture of Charles to the photo. The man on the left (looking at the picture) is an unknown farmhand. The house was located in Elverta, California.

I think this is the same Henry Harms listed below.

The family pictured at the right is said to be a HARMS family.

In a post card Post Marked: BRODERICK CAL. SEP 10 1910, an exteacher (Olive MARTINELLI) of Helena Nicolaus says she has Helena's cousin Alice HARMS in her class at a Broderick school. I think she may be the same Alice in the family below .

All the HARMS below lived in Yolo County & had something to do with "The Chicory Ranch". Yolo County Place Names - Past and Present has Chicory Bend located in the East central portion of Yolo County on the Sacramento River, South of Washington.
